Wild Weather Continues Into Weekend
MetService forecasters expect strong westerly winds and squally showers to continue until early Sunday in Northland, Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula but ease over other parts of the North Island on Saturday morning.
"The gusts in these squally showers affecting much of the North Island are reaching around 100 km/hr at times, breaking branches and making driving hazardous," commented MetService Weather Ambassador Bob McDavitt.
Mr. McDavitt added that a southerly change is forecast to spread across the South Island on Saturday.
"This is expected to accentuate the wind and rain between North Canterbury and Wairarapa on Saturday night or Sunday morning. Snow will probably lower to about 500 metres and could affect the inland Kaikoura road. Southerlies may reach gale force or stronger for a time along the Kaikoura Coast, around Wellington and in southern Wairarapa. Travellers and farmers in these areas should check the latest weather details throughout this weekend."
A sunny break in the wintry weather is expected over much of the South Island from Sunday and the North Island about Tuesday. Another dose of unsettled weather is likely about the middle of next week.
