Zonta Science Award and Building Research Award finalists
I would like to bring to your attention the tenth Biennial Zonta Science Award . The names of the winner of this award
and of the Zonta Building Research Award will be announced at Government House on Tuesday 27 May.
Those shortlisted for the Zonta Science Award are:
Dr Julie Lim, Auckland molecular biologist researching developments of medical therapies to prevent age related nuclear
(ARN) cataracts.
Dr Deidre Hart, Christchurch, researching new analysis and modelling techniques for application in research on river
mouth lagoons.
Dr Bridget L. Stocker, Lower Hutt, synthetic organic chemist who is researching the role of carbohydrates and
glycoconjugates in the immune response.
Principal sponsor of the Zonta Science Award is BP Oil, New Zealand, with the John Ilott Charitable Trust and Zonta Club
of Wellington contributing.
The Zonta Science Award recipient receives $10,000 cash, return air travel to Europe or the USA to be used to attend a
professionally related conference or places of further study and a silver and gold medal designed by well-known New
Zealand sculptor Tanya Ashken.
The Zonta Building Research Award is now in its 3rd year. This Award will provide one women seeking to pursue a PhD in
the pure or applied sciences with $25,000 per year for 3 years.
The Finalists in this Award Category are:
Maibritt Pedersen Zari of Wellington who is studying for a PhD in biomimicry, specifically research to investigate how
relationships that can be identified in biological systems may be applied in New Zealand's built environment in order to
cope with climate change impacts.
Wendy Saunders of Wellington studying for a PhD in natural hazard planning linking this to innovative land use planning
and natural hazard risk reduction.
