This Easter weekend at Wellington Zoo, visitors to the Zoo will have the chance to vote for their favourite name for our red panda cub, Senior Keeper Paul Horton announced today.
'Over Easter we're asking Zoo visitors to help us choose a name for our three month old red panda cub. We did the first health check on the cub last week and determined he is a healthy baby boy and he weighs around 600 grams.'
'We've chosen four names that reflect the origin of the red pandas that are native to mountainous areas of Asia, including the Himalayas.'
The options are: Aadi which means first or most important Oja which means glow Nawal which means new Ed after Sir Edmund Hillary.
'All Zoo visitors have the chance to help choose which name they like best and all entries will go into a draw to win a close encounter with our red pandas, where you can meet the pandas and learn all about why they are endangered in the wild and what we are doing to help save them.'
'The cub is still pretty shy, but he should soon start venturing out of the nest box more and more as he becomes more confident and wants to explore his home,' said Paul.
The naming competition will be open to all Wellington Zoo visitors over the Easter weekend and the winning name will be announced on the Zoo's website.
Wellington Zoo's red pandas are proudly supported by Classic Hits Wellington.
