Life Sciences Network supports GM Field Trial
The Life Sciences Network has written to ERMA in support of Crop and Food’s application to field trial genetically
modified brassicas in the Lincoln area confirmed Dr William Rolleston, Chairman of the Life Sciences Network today.
“This is the first outdoor application for genetic modification in four years and it is pleasing to see that New Zealand
organisations are continuing to put themselves at the forefront of modern technology.
“The information gained through this trial will help us make informed decisions about genetic modification in the future
and is in line with the Royal Commission’s recommendations to “keep our options open” and to “proceed with caution”.
“What’s more the controls put in place by Crop and Food will ensure the requirements of the Hazardous Substances and New
Organisms Act are met.
“It is in New Zealand’s interest to continue to gain knowledge about genetic modification in the New Zealand environment
and we can only do that through responsible trials carried out in New Zealand such as this one,” concluded Dr Rolleston
