Southerly Punches Us Back Into Winter
MetService meteorologists are forecasting significantly chilly conditions over the country to last until Friday. Farmers
between Gisborne and Marlborough may find these wet cold southerly winds stressful for stock, especially any recently
born lambs.
"This southerly outbreak brings us back to winter', commented MetService weather ambassador, Bob McDavitt. "It gets its
punch from the combination of a low pressure system deepening over the Chatham Islands and an anticyclone moving onto
the South Island. This southerly literally blows heat from your body so that it feels as though it's freezing."
With this wintry blast some snow is expected, mainly on Thursday night, on the higher roads of the southeastern North
Island and the central plateau. Driving conditions are likely to be hazardous.
There is a sting in the tail of this southerly with its clearing skies and lighter winds over the South Island. Orchards
and vineyards in Otago and Canterbury are likely to experience moderate frosts over the next few mornings.
MetService is forecasting that temperatures will to return to normal by the weekend.
