Father of Internet gets Cyberkey to Wellington
Tomorrow, Monday March 27, sees the official opening of ICANN Wellington at the Michael Fowler Centre. (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers - ICANN ensures the smooth operation of the Internet internationally...)
At 9am, Hon David Cunliffe, Minister of Communications and IT,accompanied by Hon Winnie Laban, Minster for Community and Voluntary Sector and Associate Minister of Pacific Affairs, will open the conference of 700 international delegates.
The Ministers will arrive at the Michael Fowler Centre at 9am to be met by ICANN chair, Dr Vint Cerf, ICANN president/CEO Dr Paul Twomey and Keith Davidson, Executive Director of InternetNZ, the conference hosts.
There will be some short speeces on the main auditorium stage, including an address by Hon Cunliffe on communications issues. This will be webcast - see www.icann.org for this and for conference details.
Following these speeches, approximately around 9.30 am, Hon Cunliffe will present Vint Cerf with a 'cyberkey' to Wellington. (Vint Cerf is regarded as the 'father of the Internet' for his work developing the TCP/IP protocols which allow the Internet to work.)
The 'cyber-key' gives him have never-ending unlimited access to broadband in Wellington, courtesy of broadband network company, CityLink, represented by Managing Director, Neil de Wit.
