Brace For Wind And Rain In The North
MetService meteorologists are warning of a low pressure system that is forecast to deepen as it approaches the north of
New Zealand on Tuesday and crosses the Northland area on Wednesday. A heavy rain warning has been issued for Northland,
Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty and Gisborne ranges north of Tolaga Bay. This system is already
strengthening the easterly winds in the far north and is expected to bring gales and heavy swell to some marine areas.
"Wind and rain in the north is expected to increase on Tuesday and peak on Wednesday," commented MetService weather
ambassador, Bob McDavitt. "Rain from this system will help reduce the currently high fire risk, and also needs close
monitoring for intense falls are being forecast especially about the hills."
McDavitt added that now is the time for people in areas north of Taupo that are open to easterly winds to prepare for
the coming windy days."Clear the backyard of those summer playthings lying around such as trampolines that are hazardous
if they become airborne."
The low-pressure system is forecast to gradually weaken on Thursday and Friday but will keep moist conditions over the
north, so that further bursts of locally heavy rain are likely until at least the end of the week.
