Labour Weekend Rain Statistics
The depression that moved over northeastern parts of the country brought near record amounts of rain. The Gisborne area
received the greatest amount of rain with Hikiwai recording 350mm in the 36 hours to 10am on Saturday, and Te Puia
Springs recording 340 mm.
Both these places had peak rain rates of 35mm per hour. Parts of Hawke's Bay to the north of Napier received over 100 mm
during this event and parts of Bay of Plenty and Coromandel recorded up to 70mm.
"The high pressure region that arrived over Labour weekend is still bringing long sunny periods to much of New
Zealand," commented MetService Weather Ambassador. Bob Mcdavitt. "It is now helping to dry out the affected farm lands.
However this high has its weaknesses. Showers blossomed on Monday afternoon from Northland to the central parts of the
North Island, and they are likely to occur again on Tuesday and Wednesday."
McDavitt added that it was a warm dry Labour Weekend for southwestern parts. "Fiordland and Westland have been having a
drier than normal October, but all that may be about to change. The next front to move onto New Zealand is coming from
the Tasman Sea. It is forecast to bring some heavy rain to Fiordland on Thursday and Westland and the Southern Alps on
Friday, and then to weaken as it moves further onto New Zealand this weekend."
