New wireless camera links mean it's bye bye, cable guy
Broadcast Communications Limited (BCL) has introduced new Gigawave wireless camera links to New Zealand that signal the
end of cable runners at event broadcasts.
Chris Giles, BCL's General Manager Field Services and Operations, says the new wireless camera links enable camera
operators to get better pictures by getting them closer to the action.
"Until now, camera operators working at outside broadcasts have been constrained by cables and reliant on cable runners
to keep things untangled.
"Without the restriction of cables, camera operators can now move freely to get closer to the action and capture the
best shots," says Chris Giles.
He says the wireless camera links, which have been introduced along with new digital helicam links as part of BCL's
Video Links suite of broadcast services, mean fewer staff are required in the field for outside broadcasts.
The new wireless camera links enable broadcast-quality footage to be streamed live from cameras at an event straight to
the director's chair, production studio or big screen. Equipped with remote camera control, they also allow production
crews to manage camera settings from the production van.
The new wireless camera links were first trialled in New Zealand by On Site Broadcasting (OSB) during the British and
Irish Lions Tour and have also been used at international sporting events including the recent IAAF World Championships
in Helsinki. The equipment is now available for rent through BCL's Video Links team.
On Site Broadcasting's General Manager, Ray Standidge, says the wireless camera links have enabled OSB to clear the
sidelines of unnecessary clutter and have freed up camera operators.
"Getting rid of cables means we can deliver a better service to our customers because our camera operators have more
flexibility to get the best pictures," says Ray Standidge.
BCL's Video Links team provides point-to-point itinerant wireless links that enable broadcast events to be delivered
live to TV studios from almost anywhere in New Zealand.
The team looks after broadcast linking services at up to 160 outside broadcast events every month for customers
including On Site Broadcasting, NZ Racing Board (for Trackside Channel), TVNZ, TV3, SKY Television and film production
companies.
