Smart Technology Sparked By Tsunami Wins Commendation
Auckland NZ: August 12, 2005: Web technology company Cyberglue is to receive a Technology Commendation from the
Foundation for Research, Science and Technology recognising its emergency disaster notification system Cyberglue eAlertT
eAlert is an incident management and notification system that assists in emergency and disaster response, using the
internet to gather, process and send out accurate information under extreme time pressure.
eAlert is believed to be a world-first and, through Cyberglue's partnership with Sun Microsystems, is gaining the
attention of government agencies, infrastructure companies and regulatory organizations in a number of countries
throughout Asia Pacific.
Cyberglue CEO Richard Gill says the FRST commendation is yet another validation of the technology that was sparked by
watching media coverage of the Boxing Day tsunami.
"I could see there was a distinct need for an integrated system that provided a single point of reference for all
information during an emergency of any size," says Mr. Gill. "We already had the basis, through developing the
AARoadwatch programme (that monitors highway incidents) and carried out the research necessary to develop eAlert."
Using eAlert, incidents can be reported via web, email, phone or PDA. They are then verified, prioritized and approved
before being sent out in multiple formats (pager, email, SMS etc) to literally thousands of recipients a minute.
"In an emergency, technology can't replace good human decision making, but what eAlert does is automate the gathering
and notification processes, freeing emergency staff to concentrate on the big picture", says Gill.In addition, eAlert is
Cyberglue's first product to be made available on Solaris 10, Sun's advanced vendor-neutral UNIX(r) Operating System.
Solaris represents over 3,000 engineering years, US$500 million in R investment, and has 12,000+ applications. "With the growth of eAlert, it makes sense for us to be developing for it and
running it in the most secure, mission-critical fashion possible", says Gill.
Cyberglue is also in the process of porting its Cyberglue mPortal(tm) product to Solaris 10. mPortal is a comprehensive
suite of applications that provide commercial membership organisations, business associations and industry bodies with a
complete online Web portal for their members.
