Pitcairn Island Criminal Trial Showcases Value of Stratos' Satellite-based Remote Communications Solutions
AUCKLAND, Nov. 1 /CNW-AsiaNet/ --
Mobile satellite technology facilitated video link between remote British colony and mainland New Zealand, providing opportunity for witness testimony by video conference
Stratos Global Corp. (TSX: SGB), a leading global communications provider and the world's leading distributor of Inmarsat satellite services, today announced that it successfully provided a satellite communications link for the just-concluded criminal trial on the remote British colony of Pitcairn Island, located in the Pacific halfway between New Zealand and Chile. Additional video links for future trials are also a possibility.
Using field-proven, easy-to-deploy Inmarsat satellite services, Stratos, working through its premium New Zealand distributor, Rocom Wireless, provided the court system with a reliable video conferencing link between the Pitcairn Island proceedings and officials in New Zealand. The link was crucial, as Pitcairn, with a population of just 47 people and located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, lacked the infrastructure and traditional connectivity for international video conferencing communications. Additionally, a number of potential witnesses and associated parties to the trial reside in New Zealand.
With satellite-based video conferencing from Stratos, witnesses and other individuals involved in proceedings such as this are not required to travel to remote locations. This saves time and money, and provides the opportunity for courts and other government bodies to hear testimony via video conference.
"The use of Stratos' mobile satellite solutions in the legal proceedings on Pitcairn Island showcased the unique capability of satellite to provide a quickly deployable, cost-effective and reliable means for voice, video and data connectivity to and from almost any location around the world, including places where traditional wireline and wireless services are unavailable," said John Shailer, Stratos' regional director, Asia-Pacific. "As the number one global provider of Inmarsat satellite services, Stratos is uniquely positioned to provide the optimal solution for almost any remote communications need, be it on the land, at sea, or in the air."
