People should know more about their employers before they make the decision to work for them says Ben Wallace, managing director of Employment Trends Limited and creator of the new Labour Market website.
"Choosing an employer is a big decision. So many times we choose an employer knowing next to nothing about them, what the workplace is like or whether we have any values in common." Labour Market helps people discover information about occupations, employers and the labour market. The idea behind the site is that everyone should be proactive when looking for work.
"Proactive job hunters don't just wait till the vacancies come up, they go looking for the company they want to work for, they work out what the company needs and they show the company how they can fulfil those needs now," says Ben.
And employees can be proactive too. "A proactive employer is an employer that is out there, making information about their business available so that they can attract the best workers, most suited to their organisation."
Labour Market assists this process by encouraging businesses to put information about their companies on the Internet (either on their own websites or on the Labour Market website). Labour Market then links its occupational information to the information on employers.
There are over 550 occupations profiled on Labour Market and every occupation includes information about the role, salary levels and numbers employed. Monthly counts of the number of job advertisements in regions all around New Zealand are also presented.
Labour Market is at http://www.labourmarket.co.nz. Employers interested in links should go to the 'About Labour Market' information on the website.
