NZ facility wins top prize in New York
The interactive and digital displays created by well-known Wellington company Click Suite for the New Plymouth library/museum and information centre, Puke Ariki, have been awarded the top prize in the Public Information category of the New York Interactive Festival.
The bronze medal (the highest honour awarded in that category) was awarded to Click Suite for the entire body created for Puke Ariki. This included 35 interactive and audio-visual components, and beat the only other finalist in the Public Information category: BBC Media.
“It’s a real thrill to have our work honoured on this highly competitive international stage. It’s not flashy big-budget pieces in this body of work, but rather each piece is focussed on particular outcomes. Some pieces are more like digital art works, others are making scientific information easily accessible, or allowing visitors to interact with Taonga Mâori, and some pieces are lighter, and more entertaining. The variety is huge – which helps make the overall experience very stimulating for the visitor” says Click Suite director, Emily Loughnan.
Click Suite:
Click Suite are no strangers to the New York festivals, having won a gold medal for the work at Te Papa and a bronze medal for their on-line learn to sail programme TACTICS, in previous years.
Click Suite have been making interactive media for ten years now, and this award is their 45th award or finalist placing in a variety of local and international award ceremonies since 1995.
Click Suite’s work covers a large variety of interactive media from DVDs to interactive banner ads to websites to large-scale projections. “We’ve seen a lot of fascinating technology developments in the ten years we’ve been doing this – our job is to keep up with the trends and recommend the best medium for our client and their audience.”

The New York festivals:
This year’s Interactive festival attracted entries from 26 countries around the world.
Over the 138 categories, just 45 medals were awarded. Click Suite’s bronze medal was the only one awarded to New Zealand.
The 2003 Interactive competition was judged by a panel of new media experts worldwide under the aegis of Graham Kelly, Executive Creative Director of Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising in Singapore. They were judged on the basis of screen design, logic and complexity of organization, effective use of resources, creativity, technical quality, effective presentation of information, compelling interactivity and effective solution to the problem.
Puke Ariki:
This unique facility opened in June 2003, and has enjoyed steady visitor numbers of between 75,000 and 100,000 each month since opening.
In its short life, it has attracted enormous interest and has set a new benchmark in the delivery of regional heritage and information services. The integration of library and visitor information services, with the modern style of interactive museum, makes for a facility that really engages an audience on a new level.
