Biggest NZ retailer says no to GE
Auckland, 5 November 2003: Greenpeace today commended Foodstuffs (Pams) on the announcement of their new non-GE policy.
“This non-GE commitment by the owners of the Pams and Budget brands is great news for New Zealand consumers,” said
Greenpeace GE Campaigner Steve Abel.
“It shows the strength of the public demand for non-GE food and makes a mockery of the Governments faith in GE crops
being a money-spinner,” said Abel.
“It also shows that moratorium or no-moratorium the consumer driven tide continues to run against GE crops. Non-GE
commitments by major industry players such as Foodstuffs make the prospects for GE crops ever more marginal.
If people won’t buy GE and food companies won’t sell it, then who’s going to grow it?”
Foodstuffs announced today that they are seeking commitments from their suppliers that all ingredients are sourced from
non-GE crops including feed.
