Foundation scheme wins Award for Màori innovation
The Foundation for Research, Science and Technology has won a BearingPoint Innovation Award for a new scheme that promotes research-driven innovation within Màori collectives.
The Award, which recognises excellence in public sector innovation, was presented by its sponsor, Te Puni Kokiri, at a ceremony attended by the Rt Hon Helen Clarke, in Wellington on Tuesday night.
The Foundation won the category of 'Innovation in Services to Màori' with its Maori Collectives' Sub-scheme, which aims to provide for the needs of Màori collectives, namely Iwi authorities, Trust Boards or incorporations; runanga; hapu, whanau or whenua-based trusts and marae committee.
The Foundation's Investment Manager - Maori Innovation, Alan Groves (Ngài Tahu), led the project. He says he is thrilled with winning the Award.
"You really do appreciate what you have achieved when a concept like this is put in the context of innovation across the public sector, within a competitive frame. I'm rapt we've received this recognition," said Alan.
"It has taken a lot of hard work and demanded absolute commitment to the initial vision."
The Màori Collectives' scheme is a sub-scheme of Technology New Zealand that links tikanga, science and business opportunity to create a true sense of intellectual liberation for both sides.
The scheme was piloted in 2001-2002 and resulted in around $1.2m of investment in new development projects. A further $1.2m is now available for investment this year.
Information, including the scheme's application form, eligibility criteria and a one-page précis of projects already funded, is available at http://www.frst.govt.nz/business (click on Màori Collectives).
