PM dismissive of labelling concerns
Parents Centre CEO, Viv Gurrey, echoed concerns about infant formula known to contain genetically modified soy.
"Recent reports of GE contamination in soy baby formula means that parents can no longer trust the integrity of food
labels, if that information is not made available," said Mrs Gurrey.
"Ideally, if parents cannot trust the current labelling regime as it applies to infant formulas they should do away
with labels altogether and opt for breastfeeding."
"While breastfeeding is proven to be the best option for babies, it may not always be possible. When breastfeeding is
not an option, parents must be able to rely on the information provided on food labels"
"The Minister of Health should come clean and identify those brands known to contain GE soy so that parents can make
their own choices and not have that decision made for them."
"We have heard government officials state that it is not necessary to release the names of the brands which contain GM
soy - this is depriving parents of the right to chose" said Mrs Gurrey. "There should be full disclosure in order for
parents to be able to make an informed choice about their children's diet"
"The Prime Minister's comment that she "never looks at food labels" is dismissive of the concerns raised by parents.
This is not about the choices adults make about their own diet, it is about the rights of parents to decide what is best
for their children," Mrs Gurrey added.
