Jerry Teo retains EA Sports Gamer of the Year title
For the second year in a row Jerry Teo has taken home the coveted title of EA Sports Gamer of the Year and a $10,000
home gaming cinema system from Sony. The 19 year-old student from Riccarton Christchurch beat five other national
finalists at the grand final in Auckland on Friday night.
Now in its fourth year, EA Sports Gamer of Year [GOTY] has become the pinnacle of competitive Playstation 2 gaming in
New Zealand. Friday night saw the top six PS2 gamers from around New Zealand play it out over an intensive five hours of
competitive gaming. It wasn't all plain sailing for Jerry. He lost his lead a couple of times to Douglas Wallace
(Wellington) and Carl Condliffe (Hamilton). In the end however, his skill, endurance and mental composure saw him take
home the title; with Douglas placing second and Carl third.
Friday nights event was also the launch of the highly anticipated EA Sports Rugby 2004. Although the game won't be
released till September 19, the finalists and guests got to play the near finished product for the first time. EA are
expecting this to be their biggest title for 2003.
"EA Sports Gamer of the Year has truly established itself as New Zealand's premium console gaming event; the quality and
skill levels of the gamers that participated certainly reflects this", says Mike Wynands Managing Director of Electronic
Arts NZ. Wynands adds "The tournament would not be the same without the quality of titles that EA Sports has to offer".
Jerry Teo sums up the evening and event as a whole, "It was, once again, an experience I'll never forget. The venue was
fantastic, the atmosphere was mind blowing and the level of gaming on display was unbelievable."
