+ Canterbury Software Inc is keen to promote the Friday Tech BBQ as a meeting point for the Christchurch tech community. If it's been a while since you last checked out the BBQ scene, now could be the time. If you know of anyone who might be interested in coming along, especially those new to the sector or new to Christchurch, forward this to them. The BBQ is an informal social and networking event that takes place every Friday, 5.30pm to around 7.30pm. It gives members of the tech community a chance to meet other similar people in a relaxed environment, talk shop, network and get to know each other better.

LOVE ME TENDER: Canterbury Software members are being offered an exceptionally good deal for subscriptions to the NZ-Australian electronic tender notification service TenderLink. Cluster facilitator James Saruchera says the regular TenderLink annual subscription cost for individuals is almost $900, but financial members taking advantage of a CSI umbrella cost can access the service at a fraction of that. The more members who sign up, the less they'll pay. For example, Saruchera says if 75 members join via CSI, they will pay only $37 each per year. It's a great reason to either join CSI or for existing members to get their membership fees paid, says Saruchera. TenderLink carries tenders, RFI and RFPs from more than 1000 newspapers and industry-related websites. Each year, TenderLink digitally publishes more than 60,000 tender opportunities, making it by far the most comprehensive and complete coverage available in New Zealand. Join CSI now and get almost 13 months membership for just $50: http://www.canterburysoftware.org.nz/join.htm ; check out TenderLink's website: http://www.tenderlink.com/explorer.htm ; email the facilitator if you're interested in this great deal: James.Saruchera@cdc.org.nz
BUGBEAR'S BACK: The BugBear.B worm, a descendant of the original BugBear which struck last year, is causing havoc worldwide. The worm can spread using network shares, directly over networks, or through email using its own email engine. The worm emails itself to addresses found on the local system (in files and email messages) and is believed to specifically focus on computers linked to certain Internet domains owned by banks and financial houses. Hard drives that are shared with an infected system are also in danger from the virus, which will append itself to more than 30 different programs and execute when those applications are run. The virus will open a "back door" on the PC, leaving Port 1080 open to intruders from the internet. Its nasties include a mass-mailer, network share propagator, keylogger, remote access trojan, polymorphic parasitic file infector and a security software terminator. See McAfee on Bugbear .B: http://vil.mcafee.com/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=100358
PATCHING OVER CRACKS: Microsoft has released a patch that fixes two newly discovered critical vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer, each of which could allow an attacker to take control of a victim's system. The cumulative patch, released in Microsoft Bulletin MS03-020, contains all previous patches for IE versions 5.01, 5.5, and 6.0. - Information Week http://www.informationweek.com/story/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=10300145

E-BUSINESS WITHIN NZ: E-Business uptake within New Zealand has been relatively slow compared to the uptake in some of New Zealand’s major trading partners, including the US, Uk and Australia. The main factors have been the perceived high costs of the technology and a lack of awareness of the benefits that e-Business can bring to the nation’s companies. Report by Brigitte Reed, Trade New Zealand eMarket Services national manager. http://www.emarketservices.com/reports_facts/articles/article030425.htm
