INTEL AND SUN MICROSYSTEMS COLLABORATE TO ENABLE POWERFUL APPLICATIONS ON JAVA™ MOBILE DEVICES RUNNING INTEL® XSCALE™
TECHNOLOGY BASED PROCESSORS
Sun Microsystems, Inc. and Intel Corporation today announced a collaboration that will enable rich, Java™
technology-enabled audio, visual and multimedia applications to users of mobile devices using Intel® XScale™ technology
based processors.
As part of the collaboration, Intel and Sun will optimise Sun’s Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC) HotSpot™
Implementation on Intel’s XScale technology based family of processors for mobile devices such as cell phones and PDAs.
Sun will then deliver the optimised virtual machines (VM) to leading mobile device manufacturers. Optimisations such as
this enable manufacturers to easily integrate Java technology-based software programs onto their devices and help to
improve the performance of applications.

of Intel XScale technology based processors is a powerful combination that will allow mobile application developers to
create a compelling array of exciting applications now and in the future.”

CLDC HotSpot Implementation is a high-performance virtual machine targeted at mass-market resource-constrained mobile
devices such as mobile handsets, pagers, and PDAs. Intel XScale technology based processors, including the Intel PXA255
processor, Intel PXA26x processors, and recently introduced Intel PXA800F cellular processor, provide a power-efficient
and high-performance platform for mainstream mobile devices. This collaboration will deliver an optimised platform that
will enable rich and powerful Java applications on mobile devices.
Optimisations to Sun's CLDC HotSpot Implementation that take advantage of Intel's XScale technology are expected to be
delivered to OEMs in the coming quarter. OEM handsets that incorporate these optimisations are anticipated to become
available later this year.* This collaboration will also extend to future optimisations from Sun and Intel.
