NZ Software Deals To Leaky Email
Lower Hutt based Scientific Software and Systems Limited (SSS) has developed software to thwart leakage of highly
sensitive commercial information by email from UMC (NYSE: UMC), a world leading semiconductor foundry in Taiwan.
"Leakage of commercial information via email is of growing concern worldwide," says SSS managing director Bill Tonkin.
Secure Computing reported last year that approximately 90% of a company's intellectual capital could be found in digital
format. According to the Gartner research group the loss of business information via email is valued at more that US$24
billion a year.
UMC's systems integrator IBM Taiwan chose SSS to develop software to help prevent unauthorised release of their client's
intellectual property via email. UMC employs over 8,500 people in offices in Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, Europe and the
States and holds more semiconductor patents than any other Taiwanese company in both Taiwan and the U.S. so protecting
their technology is a vital concern.
IBM Taiwan identified SSS as the solution provider after a global search of suitable applications. SSS had developed the
core technology of the application prior to IBM's approach. However, preventing release of commercial information
involved an innovative twist on the software's original use Tonkin said. In the deal SSS retains intellectual property
rights of the new software and will make this available in New Zealand.
"It's an important win for us" says Tonkin. "It gives credibility to our software, but more importantly it opens the
north Asian market for our products." SSS has now signed distributors for its intellectual property protection software
in Hong Kong and Taiwan and hopes to establish a strong reseller network in Asia.
Completion of the project involved SSS staff traveling to Taiwan and working closely with IBM Taiwan to understand UMC's
requirements and prepare the software specification. SSS staff will return to Taiwan in mid October to implement the
solution at UMC.
