The new CLIE’s unique features are set to broaden handheld appeal
Auckland - June 2002 - Sony New Zealand today launched its flagship handheld device - the CLIE NR70VG. Heralded as the device to extend handheld usage beyond regular nine-to-five business hours, its innovative features include the first ever flip-and-swivel LCD screen, a built-in digital camera, audio player, keyboard, and a DragonBall Super VZ 66MHz processor.
“For the first time, CLIE packs a digital camera, integrated keyboard, audio player and high resolution LCD display alongside calendars, memos and address books in one compact unit,” says Jo Walsh, Sony NZ’s Product Manager, CLIE. “We’ve taken all the features of a standard handheld, improved them and added a range of entertainment-driven applications that will see CLIE being used outside the traditional business applications.”
Built-in digital camera
The CLIE NR70VG is the first Palm-Powered handheld to feature an integrated digital camera located on the hinge connecting the screen to the keyboard. Just press the “capture” button to automatically launch the camera application and take digital images up to 320x240 pixels at the touch of a button. With a lens that rotates through 300 degrees and the CLIE Paint application you can get as creative as you want before saving your finished creations on a Memory Stick as JPEGs.
Personal audio player
The NR70VG is a fully-featured personal audio player capable of playing MP3 and ATRAC3 file formats. Tracks are stored on Memory Stick , freeing up the internal memory for other applications. For added convenience an audio remote controller and headphones are supplied with the CLIE.
A shape that shifts
The NR70VG’s design is a radical departure from the conventional handheld. Innovative from the inside out, CLIE has three configurations to make handheld computing as flexible as possible.
- OPEN - the CLIE NR70VG opens to a V-shaped configuration (like your laptop) for optimal screen viewing and use of the integrated keyboard. Type quick notes to friends or update Microsoft Word and Excel files with the supplied Documents to Go software.
- TURN - Rotate the screen 180 degrees and fold to cover the keyboard. This classic configuration is ideal for taking pictures with the built-in camera or for jotting down notes using Graffiti.
- CLOSED - rotate the LCD display back 180 degrees and close to protect the screen from accidental taps and scratches - an ideal position for listening to the integrated audio player with the LCD turned off to extend battery life.
Performance to burn
Sony’s latest handheld combines elegant, graceful design with specifications and performance that will impress even the most demanding user. This is the first handheld to support the DragonBall Super VZ (66 MHz) processor. Combine that with 16 MB of SDRAM and you’ve got enough power to easily support processor intensive applications such as video playback and games.
Interface¡K any way you like
With NR70VG, Sony has provided the user with several ways to “talk’ to the device or input data. Not only does it feature a built-in keyboard, it also includes a virtual Graffiti area and an on-screen keyboard. For convenient single-handed operation, the NR70VG includes Sony’s unique and popular jog-dial navigator.
For data transfer and back-up, the NR70VG features a Memory Stick Slot. Rich content such as movie clips, quality music and games can consume many mega-bytes of memory. With Memory Stick capacities available up to 128MB, CLIE owners never need run out of memory.
To maximise operation, the NR70VG runs on a state-of-the-art Lithium-ion Polymer rechargeable battery. While battery life varies according to operation, owners can expect a battery life of around 10 days to be normal .
New accessories have been designed to make handheld computing with the NR70VG as flexible as any lifestyle. The PEGABC10 AA Battery Adapter offers a lightweight and convenient way to extend battery power or charge on the fly. The PEGADC10 Car Battery Adaptor has been designed to enable commuters to charge in their vehicles on the way to work.
The NR70VG will be priced at $1699 (RRP), and will be available from selected retailers from 13 June. This exciting new CLIE can also be viewed at www.sonystyle.co.nz and Sony Style stores in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
