027 Mobile Phones Access Xtra Email
Telecom Mobile customers can now access their Xtra email from their 027 mobile phones.
This innovation from Telecom Mobile and Xtra represents a major step forward in wireless Internet convergence for New Zealanders.
In addition to accessing their Xtra email from a PC, the new service means Xtra's 400,000 business and residential customers throughout New Zealand now have the option of accessing their standard email account via an 027 WAP capable mobile phone.
No registration is required. 027 customers who have their Internet access and email account through Xtra can read and respond to their emails on their mobile phone simply by using their existing Xtra login and password.
Previously, customers only option was to access a mobile service portal web site so information could be sent to the user's mobile phone.
With Xtra email on your mobile phone it costs nothing to see who has sent an email. You only pay when you select an email to read or send an email. Reading or sending an email costs 35c regardless of size. There are no hidden costs such as charging for time spent scrolling through emails.
"Telecom Mobile customers are no longer tied to their PC waiting for important emails to arrive. They can be out and about conducting business or on holiday over summer and a long way from the nearest PC, but can still access their emails, using their mobile phone," says Lorraine Witten, Telecom Mobile Chief Operating Officer.
Xtra Consumer General Manager Rod Snodgrass says Xtra email on your 027 is the first time an Internet service provider (ISP) in New Zealand has offered customers the benefits of such a service.
"Xtra email on your 027 heralds the arrival of real freedom for hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders and means we can forget about the Net being tied just to a PC.
"Increasingly the Internet's most valuable applications, like email, will be delivered to consumers via their mobile phone and devices other than a PC. This is a first major step in delivering that flexibility to our customers," says Rod Snodgrass.
For customers without an Xtra account, Telecom Mobile also offers email through its mobile services Web site djuice (www.djuice.co.nz), a WAP portal which offers email as part of its service. djuice users simply register on the djuice site to receive emails there, which are then forwarded to their mobile phone. In addition any mobile customer can send or receive emails using Word Up, which uses voice recognition technology so customers can listen to emails sent to their PC and can verbally send replies.
Telecom Mobile also has a range of email options for the business and corporate market.
Telecom Mobile and Xtra plan to roll out additional features soon including:
- email filtering - so users can select which Xtra emails are received.
- message alerts for both 027 and 025 mobile phones advising customers that email has arrived, along with the first 160 characters of each new email message.
