McDonald's Goes Online In Search Of Top Talent

Published: Tue 10 Apr 2001 04:56 PM
In a first for a private company, McDonald's New Zealand has launched a high profile, integrated employment campaign and website to highlight the training and career opportunities available to employees.
McDonald's is one of New Zealand's most significant employers, employing more than 6,000 staff. In the last 25 years more than 60,000 New Zealanders have worked with the company.
"There are some great reasons to work at McDonald's. We offer a good pay rate, flexible hours and the opportunity to learn while you earn. This campaign will highlight these opportunities, at the same time addressing any misconceptions about what we offer as an employer," said Grainne Troute, McDonald's Human Resources Director.
The campaign is thought to be the first of its kind for a private employer in New Zealand. It is an integrated programme featuring television, cinema and web commercials promoting the opportunities available at McDonald's, and a new employment website (www.smartchoice.co.nz).
Designed by Haines Recruitment Agency, the commercials feature animated graphics and a dance soundtrack by DJ Phully, an upcoming Auckland dance DJ.
The website is a first for McDonald's in New Zealand. It was designed by Inkspot Digital Ltd using Flash technology and has an online application function allowing candidates from all over New Zealand to download the necessary forms and apply for a position with their local restaurant.
The campaign highlights three key advantages of working at McDonald's ? great pay at above minimum adult wage rates, flexible hours designed to suit the needs of employees, and the opportunity to learn while you earn with McDonald's.
"We have no difficulty in attracting and retaining employees. But we believe there are talented individuals who discount a career with McDonald's because they do not understand the distinct advantages of working with us," said Grainne Troute.
McDonald's is the first private company in New Zealand able to provide employees with access to New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) accredited qualifications from certificate through to diploma levels. The company helps employees to develop a real career path from their first day on the job.
By completing McDonald's training employees can gain a National Certificate in Hospitality Operations (from the Hospitality Standard Institute). This is a tangible, external recognition of the integrity and high quality of McDonald's training.
At a higher level, McDonald's provides its employees with access to the National Diploma in Business through the Auckland University of Technology and the Open Polytechnic of New Zealand which will credit seven out of the 12 necessary papers upon completion of the McDonald's management development programme.
