Digital Opportunity Partnership
Television New Zealand is delighted to have been in the vanguard of the grouping of companies that will drive the
government's first interactive educational digital communications project.
TVNZ's chief executive, Rick Ellis, says the company is technically and philosophically well positioned to give
considerable impetus to the government's initiative.
"TVNZ has been instrumental in helping to put this pilot programme in place and we look forward to working with our
partners the Learning Centre Trust, Telecom, IBM, Microsoft, NZ Post, Taylormade, INL and Renaissance in ensuring the
success of the venture."
Rick Ellis says the company has long believed that the State-owned television network should be a pivotal player in any
plan to enhance New Zealand's inter-active educational technology. He says the other organisations involved are equally
committed to the goals outlined by the Minister of Education.
"Between us we have the resources and the expertise that can make a difference. We are excited about the prospect of
putting them to work in a partnership of like-minded companies working together on a progressive government project."
Board Chairman Ross Armstrong has worked closely with the government since the Prime Minister first suggested he help
co-ordinate the expertise of companies in the information and communications business. He says the Board is solidly
behind the concept and very supportive of TVNZ's role in a project designed to begin building the sort of technology
that will help bridge the so-called 'digital divide' in our educational frame-work.
"This is a first but very important step towards a future that will assist all young New Zealanders to be on the front
foot in an increasingly complex communications world. I am very pleased TVNZ is to play an important role in these
government inspired educational pilot projects."
The educational programme was launched today by the Prime Minister and the Minister of Education in the Old Legislative
Chamber, Parliament Buildings.
