ISOCNZ CONSIDERS PROPOSAL FOR NEW SECOND LEVEL DOMAIN
FOR NEW ZEALAND
The Internet Society of New Zealand Inc (ISOCNZ) has begun public consultation on the first proposal to create a new
second level domain in New Zealand since 1996.
The New Zealand Bankers Association has applied to ISOCNZ for the creation of the ".bank" Second Level Domain as a
'moderated' or restricted Second Level Domain.
If successful the new domain, called ".bank.nz", would join four other moderated domains in the New Zealand namespace:
".govt.nz", ".mil.nz", ".cri.nz", and ".iwi.nz".
"Interest in new Second Level Domains has increased in New Zealand with the proposed expansion of the Global Top Level
Domain's (gTLD's) announced by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in November" said ISOCNZ
Chair Peter Dengate Thrush.
"We examined the issue at the National Summit on International Internet Governance in Wellington last June, but the
decision was that the Society did not need to move itself to create new Second Level Domains as there is not a shortage
of namespace in New Zealand at the moment.. Having said that, the Society has a clear process for applications by
interested parties to apply for the creation of new second level domains," he stated.
The application process can be found on the Society's website at: http://www.isocnz.org.nz/consult/2LD/. "The process
involves extensive public consultation", said the Society's Executive Director Sue Leader. The first round of
consultation takes place via a mailing list and all interested people are encouraged to join in the discussion. They can
