MEDIA RELEASE - DEFAMATION ACTION SUCCEEDS
Judgement in the Communications Trumps - Rural News defamation case was released today with Rural News found liable for defaming Communications Trumps.
Communications Trumps took the case after Rural News published an article calling the company's integrity into question over its advice to the New Zealand King Salmon Company about its former genetically modified fish trial.
Company spokesperson Alan Emerson said that he was delighted with the judgement which vindicated Communications Trumps' integrity and judgement.
"This defamation action was taken with considerable reluctance," Alan Emerson said. "No-one likes to go to court, but in this instance there was no choice.
"We were not going to be bullied and have our integrity impugned without a fight.
"News media and politicians have considerable power to damage individuals and businesses. The costs of defending a reputation are enormous in both money and stress.
"Nevertheless, this situation could not be allowed to continue without challenge," Alan Emerson said. "We are delighted at the outcome."
Further actions against Radio New Zealand and Green co-leader Jeanette Fitzsimons are continuing.
