Dr Patrick Moore Postpones New Zealand Visit - Family Bereavement
I have been advised by Dr Patrick Moore today that he has had to cancel his visit to New Zealand this week to give
evidence to the Royal Commission because of the death of his father in hospital in Vancouver. As a result his lecture in
Wellington and other activities have been cancelled.
I am seeking to make an arrangement with the Royal Commission and other Interested Persons to enable the former founder
Director of Greenpeace to give evidence in February next year when his very busy schedule permits.
The New Zealand Life Sciences Network has conveyed its condolences to Dr Moore and his family. We know how keen Dr Moore
has been to give his perspective, as one of the world's leading environmentalists, on the importance of genetic
modification for providing solutions to some of the most pressing social and environmental issues facing the world
today. We will work to make sure he has the opportunity to share his knowledge with New Zealanders and the Royal
Commission at a convenient time in the New Year.
The Network's other overseas witnesses; Dr Neal Stewart (a world authority on horizontal gene transfer, pollen drift and
gene flow) and Dr Steve Hughes (Nuffield Council on Bioethics) will still give evidence this week.
