Genie Systems Secures Major Deal In Asia With Sale of OrderWare to Singapore-based Conglomerate
E-Commerce Solution To Be Customised By NZ-Based Programmers
AUCKLAND – 24 October 2000 – New Zealand e-Commerce software development company, Genie Systems Limited, announced the
sale under licence of its flagship e-procurement system, OrderWare, to Singapore–based Keppel FELS Energy and
Infrastructure. Keppel FELS is engaged in the energy and infrastructure development business and is a world leader in
the design and construction of jack-up rigs.
Keppel FELS will use OrderWare's e-procurement application to automate the process of purchase requisitions for its rig
construction activities. This will enable the automatic consolidation of purchase orders as well as the automatic
preparation of RFQs (Requests for Quotations). In addition, the e-procurement solution will integrate to a marine portal
using the latest XML technology so that suppliers can respond online to RFQs.
The deal involving Keppel FELS is a further validation of OrderWare as a world-class product says Genie Systems CEO,
Mike Hendry. “We are a global e-Commerce collaboration and exchange platform. This contract, following on from our
success in August with Toys “R” Us in the United States, further underlines our ability to implement and operate highly
complex procurement and distribution systems throughout the world,” he said.
According to Peter Garden, Chief Technology Officer for Genie Systems, the project is particularly exciting because it
shows that OrderWare’s workflow driven procurement can handle the very complex processes associated with production or
direct procurement. “Most web based procurement systems are designed around the relatively simple processes of
requesting, approving and purchasing consumables, IT supplies and other simple products,” he said. “At Keppel FELS there
are many buyers, engineers and approvers involved in the process, with a large number of drawings, specifications and
plans attached to purchase requisitions. All of this has to be routed and managed according to complex business rules.”
The system is entirely web-based, both for internal buyers and engineers, as well as external vendors, and links through
to existing internal ERP systems.

About Genie Systems Limited
Established in 1998, Genie Systems has offices in New Zealand, Australia and the United States. The company provides
packaged applications for real time, end-to-end business-to-business e-Commerce via the Internet, trading exchange,
corporate Extranet or corporate Intranet. Its flagship suite, OrderWare, is a fully featured collaboration and exchange
package with fully integrated supply chain management and procurement capabilities to enable B2B orders to be placed
over the Internet.
OrderWare facilitates Web-based order entry, supply change management, internal procurement and product cataloguing. It
also contains an additional packaged application to streamline the frequently complex process of interfacing with
back-end third party applications. Furthermore, OrderWare has fully integrated Web-based workflow management, enabling
business processes to be truly delivered online between organisations.
In June 2000 Genie Systems secured a major licensing deal with Unisys to provide the e-Commerce capability for that
company’s global Application Service Provider (ASP). Available throughout Australasia, the service is based on the
OrderWare suite. Another significant deal, announced in August, involved the sale of OrderWare under licence to the
largest toy retailer worldwide, Toys “R” Us. The corporation’s Babies “R” Us division is using OrderWare as part of its
retail strategy with the implementation of an in-store Intranet-based special order system.
