FOREST RESEARCH TO SELL MAMUKU NATIVE FOREST AND WETLAND TO DOC
Forest Research has reached agreement in principle, with the Department of Conservation (DoC) to sell its Mamaku
landholdings to DoC.
In announcing the sale, Forest Research Chief Executive, Bryce Heard said he was delighted with the position reached.
"It has been rather unfortunate that Forest Research's position on these blocks has, to date, not been understood", he
added.
"In fact, the landholding has never been marketed or prepared for sale in any way. It was always out intention to
ensure that no harm came to the conservation areas, as evidenced by the QEII trust covenant we have voluntarily placed
over the key conservation areas. It is pleasing to us to see a happy end in sight."
The transaction is subject to approval of the Forest Research Board and the relevant Shareholding Ministers.
Forest Research will retain access rights to the landholding, which comprises 663 hectares, allowing them to complete
some ongoing research programmes. They will also retain the forestry licences for the exotic forestry plantings within
the area.
The areas hold significant botanical and wildlife value and it is understood that DoC will retain the indigenous
forestland as a conservation forest.
