When the Heat Comes on Martin Gallagher Tells Lies

Published: Fri 26 Nov 1999 03:59 PM
Today Martin Gallagher circulated a letter that said, “the current National local Member of Parliament refused to vote to allow the community to be consulted about the casino proposal”.
That statement is absolutely untrue. I have always believed that the current law is wrong. I have always said that the Casino Control Authority should have to take local opinion to account. I have always voted for any legislation that provided an opportunity for the local community to be consulted.
This statement in the last hours of an election campaign is deliberately designed to make sure that I have limited opportunity to respond to Gallagher’s lie.
Gallagher tried to get away with dishonest claims in the last days of the 1996 election. He is doing it again today.
I will be taking legal advice but in the meantime, voters need to consider whether they want an MP who is willing to lie to win votes.
