Witches Against APEC Put Spell On APEC Buildings

Published: Tue 31 Aug 1999 05:04 PM
On Tuesday August 31 at 11.30am a hex will be placed on the Auckland Town Hall, Aotea Centre and Auckland Museum. These three buildings will host the meetings of APEC officials and leaders taking place in Auckland from 7-13 September. Witches Against APEC will meet outside the Auckland Town Hall main entrance on Queen Street at 11.30am to cast a spell on the buildings.
The Hex, an ancient curse on those who worship at the altar of free trade and investment will take effect on September 7 when the first of the official meetings commences. As spells can be unpredictable Witches Against APEC can not say what all the effects will be but delegates can expect items to go missing, meetings to degenerate into meaningless arguments, and APEC to become even more unstable after the meetings. Worse still, they may find themselves mimicking Mike Moore and Lockwood Smith’s incomprehensible raves about the global economy at completely inappropriate moments.
The Transnational Corporations who have their snouts in the trough at APEC should know that the hex is contagious. They could find profits tumbling, staff leaving and the share market crash around their ears.
A Hex placed on the venues for APEC’s Small & Medium Enterprises meeting held in Christchurch in April this year resulted in the Chinese delegation mysteriously leaving before the meeting even started. As APEC is in a virtual state of paralysis it is obvious that the past Hex’s are working well.
Why are witches opposed to APEC? Witches promote harmony, goodwill and rights for all. APEC promotes rights for big business, privatisation and poverty.
The APEC Monitoring Group, which is organising a Conference, public meeting and rally over the weekend of 10-12 September supports the WAA actions. “Although APEC itself is very fragile free, trade and globalisation are pretty formidable forces. We will take all the help we can get in pushing APEC over the edge ” said APEC Monitoring Group spokesperson Leigh Cookson.
