Hutt Green Party members selected Cliff Mason to stand for the Hutt South electorate last night.
Dr Mason received a Diploma in Obstetrics in 1980 and since 1983 has worked as a pathologist. He has been employed at
Hutt Hospital since 1993, and is Clinical Head of Department, Pathology, and lead pathologist for the breast screening
programme.
He has been an active member of Revolt Against Genetic Engineering (RAGE) since 1998, and has made submissions opposing
the field trials of genetically modified organisms to the Environmental Risk Management Authority.
Dr Mason has been vocal in his opposition to the government's health reforms and has made submissions on rural health.
Dr Mason said that he decided to become a candidate because he realises the link between healthy people and a healthy
environment.
"Our health and prosperity is dependent upon a healthy natural environment and that can only be secured by a strong
Green Party presence in Parliament," he said.
He said he will be campaigning hard for the Party Vote in Hutt South. "I hope to get 2000 Party votes in this electorate
to help set New Zealand on the path to a Green future."
Green Party Co leader Jeanette Fitzsimons said she was thrilled to have a candidate of such high caliber as Cliff
representing the Green Party in the Hutt. Ms Fitzsimons said he has already played a major role in the development of
the Green Party's health policy, which would be launched soon.
"As a clinical doctor Cliff is someone who can speak with authority on the risks of genetic engineering and its
potential risks to health," said Ms Fitzsimons.
