If Speaker of the House Trevor Mallard wanted to see gorillas in Africa he should have paid for the privilege, says the
New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union.
Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director Jordan Williams says “There is plenty of wildlife at Wellington Zoo. Taxpayers
should not have to fund Trevor Mallard to see the same thing in Rwanda.”
“At least when the Speaker went to Japan to watch the All Blacks, you could argue there were some limited benefits for diplomacy. The benefit to taxpayers from the Speaker visiting
countries in Africa and going on safari adventures to promote ‘cultural ties’ is extraordinarily small.”
“Speakers tours are from a bygone colonial era. They offer little, if any, value for taxpayers and should be scrapped.”
