Labour’s anti-CGT petition shows policy in disarray

The fact the Labour Party is collecting signatures both for and against the proposed capital gains tax suggests the party is in disarray over the issue, says the New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union.
Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director Jordan Williams says, “When we were first told Labour’s activists were collecting signatures for both sides, we thought it was a joke. While the Government wing of Labour pays Sir Michael Cullen to promote a capital gains tax in the media, the Party wing is harvesting emails on both sides of the issue.”
“If Labour doesn’t know what its own supporters think of the capital gains tax, how can they assume support from taxpayers in general for Dr Cullen’s extreme and bureaucratic proposal?”
“Unlike Labour, we know where we stand. Dr Cullen’s proposals fail the tests of fairness and should be axed. Labour voters who agree need only sign up once at www.taxpayers.org.nz/cgt.”
