MEDIA RELEASE
British Petroleum Should Apologise for And Correct Fuel Tax Pamphlet
8 JANUARY 2019
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Taxpayers' Union is calling on BP to correct leaflets about the costs of petrol which underestimate the tax component of the price paid for petrol by as
much as 10 percent.
"BP have failed to include Auckland's regional fuel tax in their calculations and with the recent fall in price, the
proportion of the pump price which is tax has got larger."
"BP represent 44 cents in the petrol dollar being paid in tax. In fact, for most motorists, the amount is more than 52
cents in the dollar including the Government's ETS levy."
"BP should apologise and correct its figures. Motorists deserve to know just how much of their fuel money is being
siphoned by the politicians."
"In Britain, BP worked with other fuel companies and third party groups to force the hand of the UK Government on fuel
levies. It is troubling to see this sort of misleading leaflet which plays into the politicians hands and downplays the
real reason why there is pain at the pump. Motorists deserve better."
