VicNats Oppose Victoria University of Wellington Name Change

Published: Thu 11 Oct 2018 11:05 AM
Today the Victoria University branch of the NZ Young Nationals (VicNats) have called for a halt on the proposed name change and rebranding of Victoria University of Wellington.
“The VicNats have a long history on campus and we are proud of the common name ‘Victoria’ that unifies us and our past members.” Says VicNats Chair, Grahame Woods.
“The proposed name change has fallen flat in terms of support from current students, alumni and academic staff, with roughly 75% of all submitters on the change opposing it.”
“We are of the view that this voice has been simply ignored by the University Council and therefore does not represent a robust consultation process or demonstrate public support.
“Minister Hipkins needs to stand his ground and reject the proposed change. The requirement for demonstrable support has not been met and the answer is a simple one – stick with Vic.”
The proposed name change passed at the Victoria University Council meeting on the 24thof September nine votes to two, and will now be referred to the Minister of Education for confirmation and finalisation.
