CTV Families response to Stuff article 25.08.18: Passive fire failure puts lives at risk
The following brief commentary had been posted this on the CTV Families Facebook and is in response to a Stuff article 25.08.18: Passive fire failure puts lives at risk.
Why are lives still at risk, for those that occupy high rise apartments or office blocks in New Zealand!
Delegates attending the ‘‘Passive Fire Compliance: What You Don’t Know’’ conference held in Auckland last Friday were
told that:
“New Zealand's been lucky not to have a multiple death fire tragedy in a high rise apartment or office block because
many buildings' passive fire systems are compromised.”
Furthermore, Ed Claridge, chief fire engineer at Auckland Council, said New Zealand had to end its race to "deregulation
through incompetency".
New Zealanders would rightfully have expected lessons to have been learned from the CTV collapse, and the Grenfell Tower
fire in the UK, resulting with critically important changes being made to avoid risks for those people that work or live
in some of our high rise buildings!
With no apparent urgency, as reported from last Fridays conference, to address the critically important safety
improvements identified by industry experts, in my opinion, one obvious question the media must now ask of Prime
Minister Jacinda Ardern is, what immediate action will she be pursuing to ensure that the lives of people in high rise buildings are better
protected?
