RNZ Welcomes Funding Increase

Published: Wed 11 Jul 2018 03:42 PM
RNZ welcomes the increase in funding announced by the Government today, says RNZ Chairman Dr Jim Mather.
“The increase recognises RNZ’s unique and pivotal role as Aotearoa’s independent commercialfree public broadcaster that serves all the people.
“This is a step towards a more comprehensive multimedia RNZ that connects with a wider range of people on a variety of platforms.
‘More than ever Aotearoa needs a strong public service media organisation providing trusted news and current affairs which explores and reflects our unique national identity, diversity and culture.”
RNZ chief executive Paul Thompson said the boost in funding would accelerate its transformation into a multimedia outlet.
“We are ambitious for RNZ and for the high quality services we provide to New Zealanders. Already we are reaching more people than ever before on-air, online and on-demand and through our content partnerships with more than 25 outlets.
“Both the $4.5m increase in direct funding and the new $6m Innovation Fund allow us to be even more ambitious as we strengthen current services and create innovative high quality content for new audiences.”
Mr Thompson said RNZ was committed to continuing to work collaboratively with other media outlets to get the best value for the public from its unique content.
“We are also excited about the creation of the Innovation Fund and the opportunity it creates to work in new ways with NZ On Air and with content producers.”
Dr Mather said RNZ looked forward to working with the Broadcasting Minister Clare Curran on a sustainable long-term funding model for the broadcaster.
“This year’s increase is a good start which recognises that the transformation of RNZ into a modern, multi-platform digital media organisation is underway.”
