The Ration Challenge Journey: With Not Against

Published: Wed 16 May 2018 02:03 PM
Wellington, New Zealand, 16 May 2018 – The Ration Challenge has partnered with Oxfam New Zealand to launch for the first time in New Zealand, giving Kiwis a powerful way to come together, take action and show refugees we’re with them not against them.
The Ration Challenge help support Syrian refugees living in camps in Jordan, having fled 7 years of conflict and violence in their own country. Funds raised will help provide food rations, medicine and education for Syrian refugees; and support the work of Oxfam to improve the lives of people living in poverty around the world.
I am an Indonesian Kiwi Muslim living in Wellington, New Zealand. In preparation for this years’ upcoming Refugee Week (June 17-24) I will be participating in The Ration Challenge during The Fasting Month of Ramadhan by living on the same rations as a Syrian refugee to raise money and awareness of the plight of refugees around the world.
I was a former Teacher Aid for Refugees in Jakarta, Indonesia. Each day, I listened to their stories and journey as they flee from the war. One of the reasons why I am doing this challenge is driven from getting to know the number of refugee students waiting to be placed to a new country.
I never realized how grateful I should be when there are others who are less fortunate. To have a roof over my head, food on the table surrounded by family and even a warm blanket... often times, we tend to take things for granted. There are children and adults on the other side of the world who are craving for such important necessities.
I want to do more to help and encourage others to join in this journey. I will be participating in this challenge during the last week of Ramadhan (9-15 June).
The money raised will provide Syrian refugees with food, medicine and education. And most importantly, to be helping them find the physical and emotional strength they need to cope with the horrors they've suffered, and the hardships of life as a refugee.
