National calling for Northcote candidates
National is on the hunt for its candidate to fight the Northcote by-election, with nominations officially opening today.
“Northcote has had a strong, effective local National MP in Jonathan Coleman for the last 13 years, and we want to ensure we are putting forward the best person to continue that representation,” National Party President Peter Goodfellow says.
“National will run a shortened but robust selection process for the by-election. Nominations open today and close on 3 April, with final selection 15 April.
“We want our candidate to be out there as soon as possible, hitting the ground running and talking with Northcote voters about their aspirations and concerns.
“Although National has held the seat since 2005, and won the Party Vote consistently since then too, we never take any election for granted and will be campaigning hard to give Northcote a new National MP that can stand up for it in Wellington.
“This weak Labour-New Zealand First-Greens Coalition Government has only been in office a few months, and we’re already seeing signs of infighting, the influence of special interests, and their costly plans collapsing around them.
“As the strongest opposition ever, a new MP for Northcote will be a part of a National team that is holding Jacinda Ardern, Winston Peters, and their Ministers to account, and putting forward an alternative plan that can keep Auckland and New Zealand growing.”
