Media interest in Turei’s benefit fraud is justified

The New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union says it is deeply concerning that Green MP Marama Davidson fails to understand the ongoing public interest in Metiria Turei’s benefit fraud investigation.
Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director Jordan Williams says, “Davidson told Radio Waatea that Turei owes the media ‘nothing’. That’s absurd – Ms Turei wanted this conversation, and people in positions of power must be accountable to the media, it’s part of being accountable to all taxpayers.”
“Our focus on this case isn’t about beating up on Metiria Turei. It’s about giving New Zealanders confidence that the rules apply to politicians just as they do the rest of us. If elected MPs like Marama Davidson don’t understand this, we should be very worried.”
“Ms Turei said she’d pay the money back. So why, six months later, hasn’t she coughed up?”
