Wellington children’s hospital a win for families
National Party candidate for Wellington Central Nicola Willis has celebrated the news of a new $50 million children's
hospital for Wellington.
The announcement was made this morning at Wellington Hospital where a heads of agreement was signed between Wellington
benefactor Mark Dunajtschik and Capital and Coast DHB.
"This will make a big difference to families with children in hospital and it will support the wonderful staff of
Wellington hospital to offer the best care possible,” Ms Willis says.
"I spent several nights in Wellington children's ward earlier this year and was impressed by the care we received.
"Even so, it was clear the ward was dated and lacked the purpose-built family facilities and private rooms needed for
world-class infection control.
“Having experienced the ward personally in recent months, I know that our families will benefit in many ways from a
modern, child-focused facility.
"The new facilities will make a huge difference to Mums and Dads in hospital with their kids, giving them comfortable
space to be together in. A hospital stay is difficult for any family so it's wonderful to see Wellington will now have a
facility that will make that experience a bit easier.
"I thank Mr Dunajtschik for his generosity. His commitment is further evidence of the amazing community spirit of
Wellington.
"I also want to thank the Minister of Health Dr Jonathan Coleman and his Ministry for supporting this to be a reality.”
