Greyhound racing industry running scared today

This morning Direct Animal Action (DAA) led a public protest outside the Rydges Hotel in Auckland, where Greyhound
Racing NZ’s AGM and awards ceremony is being held.
Protesters and their canine companions demonstrated as part of a nationwide day of action to stand up for the hundreds
of greyhounds which go missing every year in the greyhound racing industry.
“We tried to deliver a letter to Phil Holden, CEO of Greyhound Racing NZ, along with a wreath commemorating the lost
dogs. Our intent was to open communications with the industry, but we were turned away at the door and asked to leave,”
DAA spokesperson Amie Wolken says.
“Today’s action was driven by the hundreds of dogs disposed of as ‘wastage’ every single year for greyhound racing in
NZ.
“This is a result of industry over breeding and importing more dogs than can be rehomed. Greyhounds are at serious risk
of injury and death every time they step onto the track.”
A coalition of groups are working toward a nationwide ban, following the NSW ban of greyhound racing there. This week
public actions against the industry have swept the nation.
“New Zealander’s love their dogs and this week they’ve stood up in outrage against the industry,” said Ms Wolken.
