Have your say on fisheries operational review

02 Nov 2015

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has started a review of New Zealand’s fisheries management system and is inviting people to have their say.

Research shows that the fisheries management system is sound. However, as the Fisheries Act and the Quota Management System have now been in place for 20 and 30 years respectively, it has been decided that now is time to look at how the system is operating and examine if processes can be improved.

Jarred Mair, director of sector policy at MPI, said: “Over the past 30 years, changes in technology and customer expectation mean that now is an appropriate time to review how New Zealand’s fisheries management system operates. As part of this review a series of community drop-in sessions have been arranged where we people can learn more, discuss their questions and learn how they can take part.

“This is an important initiative in helping MPI to understand what works well, what could be improved what needs to be done to ensure New Zealand retains its reputation as having a world class fisheries management system.

Community drop-in sessions will be held at the following venues during November.
