SOLGM Launches LGAccelerated Leadership Programme to Councils
The New Zealand Society of Local Government Mangers (SOLGM), in partnership with the Capability Group, has launched a
brand new leadership development programme for local government staff.
The LGAccelerated Leadership Programme comprise of five modules that focus on key leadership areas.
Each module begins with a face-to-face workshop, which features a council Chief Executive sharing their insights into
real leadership challenges and opportunities they face. They then utilise self-directed learning between workshops. The
Programme is aimed at mid-tier staff looking to develop their leadership skills.
The Programme was launched this month at Matamata Piako District Council where 20 staff from around the Bay of Plenty
and Waikato regions attended the first of the face-to-face workshops. The other four modules, will roll out over the
coming months, being hosted at various councils across the region.
The Programme balances the latest thinking in leadership development with the more traditional methods in a way that
allows participants to better understand their roles as leaders and complement other development opportunities. The
learnings are then applied directly to participants’ day to day work.
“It was really exciting to see the level of involvement from the team who joined us in Te Aroha for the first
face-to-face workshop,” says SOLGM Manager, Learning and Development, Natalie Stevens “We are really looking forward to
seeing how the participants evolve as the Programme progresses over the coming months.”
“Prior to attending these workshops each participant prepares by reading material, reflecting in their learning journals
and planning how they apply their knowledge after the workshop. The participants then apply what they have learnt within
the workplace” Natalie explains. “Although the traditional model of delivering short courses is effective in many areas,
when it comes to leadership development, offering a solution that is directly applicable to participants’ work and
supported by their colleagues and experts from across the board, is ultimately more valuable.”

global best-practice models in a cost-effective manner. Participants are able to learn from each other and apply the
principles of transformational leadership across their peer group”
