John Key target of animal rights protest
This afternoon, animal rights activists will target John Key in a protest outside an Auckland bar where he will be
having drinks with the Young Nats.
This is the first of a series of protests planned at National Party events across the country which aim to pressure
National to ban factory farming.
Protest organiser Jessie Hume says, "Recently the public have been shocked by footage of pigs confined in cages too
small to turn around in appalling conditions. In response to this Labour, the Greens, Internet/Mana and United Future
have all committed to getting rid of factory farming.
"But instead of responding to public sentiment, National are forging ahead with mega factory farms introducing colony
cages which will see tens of thousands of hens kept in small cages inside windowless sheds.
"It's time for John Key and National to step up and make a commitment to ban factory farming. National could end factory
farming overnight and their failure to do so is inexcusable.
"Kiwis love animals and we won't vote for factory farming."
Protestors will meet at 4pm at the Chancery Square Fountain, Auckland City then take a short walk to the protest
location.
