Policing the criminal activities of gangs
ACT Leader Dr Jamie Whyte has responded to the government’s announcement on the policing of gangs.
“While I am pleased the Police are going to set up an intelligence unit to monitor the gangs’ criminal activities, I am a bit surprised to learn the Police do not already do this.
“However, if the Minister is saying the Police are going to monitor their law abiding activities, then that is a matter of concern.
“In a free society people are free to associate for law abiding activity. It is not the role of the Police to be social workers or, worse, spies. The Minister needs to clarify that she is not setting up a police state.
