TAXPAYERS' UNION BACK LGNZ CALLS FOR GREATER TRANSPARENCY
25 JULY 2014
The Taxpayers’ Union is backing Local Government New Zealand’s calls for the Official Information Act to be extended to cover the Local Government Commission. Union Executive Director, Jordan Williams, says:
“Decisions about amalgamation and the structure of councils shouldn’t be made in secret. We are delighted that LGNZ is acknowledging that more transparency is needed and will support lobbying efforts in this area."
“It is fantastic that LGNZ is finally supporting transparency. Given that LGNZ's whole operation is funded by ratepayers and it currently doesn’t fit under freedom of information laws, we hope that any law change relating to the Local Government Commission would also bring LGNZ-type quangos and lobby groups into the sunshine."
