Responding to the Fairfax article that taxpayers are unable to find out the extent of disgraced MP Claudette Hauiti’s spending, Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director, Jordan Williams, says:
“Where taxpayers’ money goes, so too should the Official Information Act. We have seen numerous cases of politicians of all stripes abusing taxpayers’ money. It’s time for that to stop and for all MP’s spending to be accessible under the OIA, as is the case for Ministers.”
“Earlier news reports suggested that Ms Hauiti had misused taxpayers’ money on‘refreshments’ for a hui. How can we know she wasn’t boozing up on the taxpayer unless there is full disclosure of her misspending?”
