Parole Fail | Who’s Next?
Sensible Sentencing Trust is once again calling for parole to be abolished after yet another colossal parole failure has
been revealed this week.
Hugh Hemi Tuatua Tareha was given parole just four months before he sexually assaulted an 87-year-old woman in a nasty
home invasion in Hastings last November. “It gets even worse” says Ruth Money SST spokesperson, “Tareha had been before the Parole Board just the day before the attack! The Parole Board reported they were ‘pleased
with his performance’.”
Tareha now joins a long list of tragic examples of Parole Fail says Money. “Who will be next? What will it take before the system is overhauled? The death of an MP’s loved one perhaps?”
“Tareha, Aaron Rhys MacDonald (due to be sentenced later this month for murder), Graeme Burton and William Bell are all
examples of poor decision making by the Parole Board leading to murder or other serious violent offending. Offenders
should serve their judge given sentence and then start a monitored reintegration process. Standard parole eligibility at
1/3rd of the Judge-ordered sentenced is an absolute travesty and sick joke.”
